Most Canadians pay their bills in one of three ways.  Either they:

  1. Receive a paper copy showing the amount they owe, write a cheque for the amount, put it in an envelope, and mail the payment back
  2. Receive a paper or digital copy showing the amount they owe, log in to their online account, and pay the bill
  3. Have several different automatic withdrawal payments set up through their bank (if their utility, insurance provider, municipal government allows it)

None of these payment options are ideal in terms of saving valuable time, helping you budget, or giving you rewards simply for paying the bills that you need to pay anyway.

Paytm (Pay Through Mobile) is a bill payment service that is new to Canada – but not new on the world stage.  I don’t know about you, but I really appreciate benefitting from someone else’s learning curve.  The online platform looks great and is very user friendly. Best of all – it’s FREE.

That’s not a trick.

It’s not: free – except for the fine print terms and conditions.

It’s not: $0 per month – but oh, here are some percentage commissions.

It IS simply an absolutely free way to pay your bills or send money online!

Paytm Canada's Best Bill Payment Service

Paytm is a great way to stay organized when paying bills – and helps keep things as pain-free as possible.  It’s not magic – you’re still going to have to pay those pesky electricity costs in the middle of winter – but the online platform will allow you do things quickly, and reduce the chances you’ll get with late bill penalties.  Paytm allows you to login from your smartphone.  You can now pay bills wherever you are – gone are the days of sitting down at the kitchen table several times a month in order to write cheques and file paper copies.  Now, you simply set up all of your major payments (the platform now accesses more than 5,000 Canadian billers) and check into one simple place when you want to pay a bill, double check a deadline, setup a preferred payment method for each bill (including credit cards), and even set up notifications that will help keep you on track.  One place for all of your bills means no more multi-tier organization strategy for keeping track of cheques and mail!

Paytm vs Your Bank

While the best of the standard traditional options that most Canadians use is probably paying their bills online through their bank (whether one at a time or through an automatic withdrawal), Paytm offers several advantages over banks including being able to view all of your bills in one place (including past payments), having an excellent merchant-funded reward system that allows you benefit 5-15% when you use gift cards to places like Amazon.ca, Best Buy, or Tim Hortons to name a few, and being able to send money without fees (no monthly “super account” charges).Paytm

Time Costs Money When You’re Late

It sounds crazy to say that Canadians spend hundreds of millions of dollars every year on late fees, late penalties, and sky-high late interest rates because most of us are afraid to talk about money – especially money mistakes – for fear of looking dumb.  The truth is that these financial mistakes are much more common than we would think and are far costlier than most of us would predict!  Paytm will allow you to set up a notification that will let you know you have an upcoming bill every day for up to ten days.  While this isn’t exactly the most exciting notification to receive, it could go a long way to prevent companies from loonie-and-toonieing you to death (it used to be nickel-and-dime… dat inflation doe) with automatic non-payment charges.

It’s simple and easy to add new bills (check out the below screenshots) and Paytm has fairly clear instructions on how to do so.  They’re not new to this game having perfected the platform through feedback from millions of other clients from around the world.  To make things as easy as possible, Paytm even has a concierge service.  Paytm Concierge will setup each biller in your account for you if you don’t want to be bothered with the original setup paperwork.  Simply email a picture or copy to care@paytm.ca and they’ll take care of the rest.

Friends Don’t Let Friends Pay Bills The Old Way

Paytm is willing to pay you to help spread the good word about their service.  When someone uses your referral code and makes a minimum payment of $50, you and the person using the code will each get $10 cash in your accounts!

Quit paying your bills like it’s 1995 and take advantage of paying them all in one simple place – then get rewarded to do it – with Paytm!

I initiated two credit card payment transactions, my account got debited by PayTm the very next day but my credit cards havent received the amounts yet, its been more than a week, no customer care support. Really pathetic unreliable service. Shame on them!

A question for paytm users! Is there any financial reward for using paytm to pay your bills with your bank account – or are you only able to reap rewards if you’re paying with a linked credit card?

Am says:

We recently started using Paytm to pay our bills. A couple big benefits for us include: 1) Paying our property taxes and utility bills with our credit card and getting travel points and 2) Using our VIP status to buy gas gift cards with a cash back feature. We generally purchased gas gift card using Ebates to get a small cash back. But Paytm offers a greater cash back. The one drawback we have noticed is that there is sometimes a delay with Paytm paying the bill (can be 3-5 days). Previously with our bank, we could pay a bill the day the payment is due and not worry about late fees. We tried to pay a phone bill with Paytm on the day the bill was due, but the phone company didn’t receive the funds until a few days after the due date. We got hit with a late fee. However, Paytm reimbursed us immediately (and then some) after we notified them. We were pretty happy with the customer service and now just make sure to pay bills within a few days of the due date.
